More homemaking ridiculousness
Shameless plug: I love my Pumie Heavy Duty Scouring Stick. Mine's more a scouring nubbin right now, but that's ok, I'll show you why...
Before I start, let me say that I knew these toilets were this way when I married my husband. I'd been throwing random effort at them on my visits for 3 years or so. He'd been occasionally working on them too. So when I moved in, the toilets were gross-looking, but really, it's just the hard water, they were pretty sanitary. But god, they were ugly. (ETA: He wants me to mention that they were pretty gross when he moved in, too. Five years ago.)
See? Gross. And a regular toilet brush did nothing for them.
But yesterday I dropped $2 on a pumice stick. And wow. See, after 15 minutes, this is what that toilet looked like:
Much better. Unfortunately, by that point, the stick was becoming nubbinish, so I couldn't get the same leverage as before, so after another 15 minutes, I decided it was good enough. (ETA: Chris couldn't believe I spent 30 minutes on this. I can't believe he thought 5 years of hard-water buildup would come off in five minutes.)
And that'll just do for now. Or at least till Menard's restocks their pumice sticks.

my mom once had luck using vinegar, since the stains she was dealing with were mostly calcium deposits(?) The vinegar + scrubbing slowly melted them away.
