Have I mentioned you all need to watch Six Degrees this fall? Everyone needs to watch it so he'll stay employed. It'll be on after Grey's Anatomy, so you don't even have to watch it, just keep the tv on after Grey's goes off. If you're anything like me, you'll be so drained after Grey's makes you bawl like a baby that you can't really watch it anyway. But just leave the tv on and don't change the channel. It'll be fine.

And on weekends in September, he's going to be playing with Will Smith and Johnny Depp in a kind of vampire flick, I guess. Except for that weekend he comes down here.

I am fairly certain that Stephen Colbert, after getting himself banned from Wikipedia last week, managed to destroy tonight. I tried to find the Tabasco and Tako he showed tonight, but Kittenwar was totally not responding.

So amused. All hail the power of the Colbert.

President Bush has undertaken to form a National Mathematics Advisory Panel. They should report to him and to the Secretary of Education. Awesome. So glad about that. Concern for mathematics and the education thereof is a Good Thing.

Here's the problem. The woman who has been named Vice-Chair of this panel, Camilla Benbow, did a study of 7th grade SAT scores from a Johns Hopkins talent search program throughout the 1980s.

Her findings led her to favor "the hypothesis that sex differences in achievement in and attitude towards mathematics result from superior male mathematical ability . . . [which] is probably an expression of a combination of both endogenous and exogenous variables."

In other words, she thinks men are better at math than women, and to some extent, it's genetic.

I don't agree. I'm not the only one, I know.

The AWM has got an online petition going, asking the President to remove Dr. Benbow from the panel. I signed it. I thought I'd pass the word along.

The AWM has a Background Page on this issue. I was impressed by how well-referenced it was, and the different numbers in other studies besides Benbow's.

The petition is here.

Rose people will find this amusing: I currently teach in Olin Hall.

Oh, those Olins. So promiscuous with their tech money: they'll give it away to anyone. (Not really, but apparently the FW Olin foundation has built 72 buildings on 52 campuses, so they do get around...)

Another connection: Rose is moving from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. BSC just dropped from Division I to Division III, and guess which conference they're joining? Yeah, the one that Rose just left.

Academia is such a small world.

Because it's summer by any yardstick not related to a solstice (I just heard the ice cream truck, it is so summmer), two faboo fluff novels for y'all today, great for beach reading. Not that I'm going to a beach anytime soon. Also great for reading on long car trips, these two made both laps of our Indy 500 fly this weekend:

Thanks so much to all who wished me a happy day today. It meant a lot to me. I really hadn't meant to do anything special, but you all made it so.

I am so blessed to have such great friends.

So yeah, they raised postal rates. No biggie, right? Except I had stuff to send yesterday. And I didn't get away from campus till almost 10. No problem, I thought, they have those machines, right? All I need are those 2 cent stamps, and all will be well.

Except it's not that easy. The big vending machine is out of 40 cent books. Which would have been perfect. Crap. So I check the big scary new "we'll even weigh your package for you!" machine. If I want any stamp other than the new ones, they need to be stamps worth more than $1. Doh. I go to the little crappy one-at-a-time machine on the wall. I've gotten one-cent stamps from it as change before. I buy a 39 cent stamp with 45 cents. I get a new stamp and a nickel and a penny. Doh! I try just putting those in and pushing some buttons. I get them back. Crap. I'm going to have to do this some other way. I put the new stamp next to the old one on my power bill and go ahead and mail it. I'm going to have to figure out something else for the note to my aunt.

It shouldn't be this hard.

I desperately want to wave my left hand in all your faces and cackle loudly at my victory in the female wars.

And yet, I don't, as I'm Not That Girl. Besides, there's nothing on the left hand yet.

And drat for not having next fall's football schedule up yet. Don't the nice people at the AU athletic department realize that people have planning to do?

Not till the thesis is done, naturally, but you know...

Ok, so who wants on the bridezilla filter?

I was going to blog a response to this article I found while blogstalking, but upon rereading with intent to rebut, I realized the guy's a screaming idiot with no clue of the soul-sucking potential of engineering classes, as he dropped out halfway through the second semester of a pre-engineering curriculum.

And so I hereby decry him as an example of the whiny consumerist student with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement.

That is all.

Yesterday's stamp issue begs the question:

How many stamps can I currently (end of the month/post-conference) afford, and how many can I reasonably expect to use before they raise postage rates again?

Stamps! )

Alarm went off today and I turned it off and turned the radio on, because it's what I do, and when I really wake up there's Cathy yelling in my ear: "bagels and bananas and jojoba and "Come to New York" and vegetarian chili."

Okay. I was holding off on it, but now I'm psyched.

And then Scott Simon and the director dude had to talk about math like it's art. And addictive. Which is so true. Makes me happy.

So I'm going to go feed my fiend.

Have I mentioned how happy it makes me that the "Go to Church or the Devil Will Get You!" sign on I-65 northbound has been replaced?

It now reads "We ♥ Lucy, Lucy Baxley for Governor"!!!

Okay, so I went a-traveling this weekend, and to me, long, boring plane flights mean perfect reading time.

However, I had nothing to read upon leaving Birmingham. That's fine, 40 minutes to Memphis and I was too exhausted to think on the 7am flight anyway. But that meant I was a prime target when I got there, hungry, cranky, and having had only 3 hours of sleep the night before. And I had two hours worth of layover. So I gave in and wandered to the bookstore. Three airplanes, one wedding, and two books later, I'm home.

And how is it that I never think to look for Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation till I'm in an airport bookstore?

No sleep. Life confiscated. More later.

Please let me know if you want my sorority ranting. There will be plenty. I will set up a filter.
